My journeys usually start by seeing photographs in a magazine, on a website, or at photography workshops.  It’s not a sudden realization that's where I want to go, but rather a slow and thoughtful process of deciding where, when, how to get there, and how much this is going to cost me.
I look for different and visually appealing places like mountains, glaciers, deserts, and coast places that aren't heavily travelled. I don't mind the cold, but I dislike the heat. I’m willing to travel to deserts, as far from the equator as possible, but only during the winter months.  Part of my planning involves looking at different photography workshops, which often guide you to the most visually appealing sites.
Every picture I take captivates me and is deeply emotional, often in unexpected ways, whether I am shooting it there or looking at it later. I want to appreciate the scenery, meet people, explore places, and experience everything firsthand.
When I travel, I think about what image will make for a good watercolor. Watercolors are unique. I use layers to build dimension. I generally paint tight with a lot of detail. Does that mimic a photograph? I guess. So far, I'm not a plein air painter who can sit and paint what he sees. That may be down the road, but I plan it out right now.
As a watercolor artist, I use water and color to create my artwork. I understand that I am working with a fluid medium that is difficult to correct. I have many pieces that I consider cast-offs or have ended up in the trash. Most of the time, I persist until I find an acceptable flow and technique that resonates with me, if not, rip.
I hope my photographs, watercolors, and stories provide pleasure, knowledge, and insight into our wonderful, fragile world.
